Sea Oaks is situated in a lush setting of majestic live oaks and towering sabal palmettos, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River and Captain Forster’s Hammock Preserve. A rare find on the Treasure Coast, Sea Oaks’ unique natural surroundings create a particular obligation to preserve and protect our natural environment. Sea Oaks strives to be a leader among barrier island communities for good environmental practices by initiating and implementing a reduced environmental footprint. We call it “Living Green”.

Recycling bins for paper products, glass and plastic containers, and metal cans are located throughout our community in our venues and our neighborhoods. We offer a centralized location for battery and tennis ball recycling, and soon will expand it to include recycling of plastic bags, Styrofoam, light bulbs and small electric items. We also hope to be one of the first barrier island communities to offer a composting service to individual households.
There are four Blink chargers in the parking lot of the Sea Oaks Community Center for the convenience of members, renters, and guests. The chargers provide Level 2 charging (240 volt) at up to 80 amps. All contemporary EVs and plug-in hybrids can use the chargers, although some may need adapters.
Ongoing initiatives to ensure the well-being of our natural environment include professional monitoring and renourishment of our dunes to offset shoreline erosion, sea turtle nest monitoring with appropriate beachfront lighting to protect this endangered species, sponsorship of a 200-capacity Bat House at the Captain Forster Hammock Preserve to support the local bat population, and placement of oyster mats in our marina to improve water quality in the Indian River lagoon.
News outlets and social media are full of articles on environmental threats, but it’s hard to know how these issues impact us directly, much less how we can make a difference as a community and as individuals. Sea Oaks regularly brings in speakers to address Florida-specific environmental issues and trends. Recent and upcoming topics include The Indian River Land Trust, Fishing the Indian River Lagoon, The Brevard Zoo Conservation Work, Indian River Oyster Mat Project and The Bat Conservancy.
